Origin clarification: Important: “Rio Minas” commonly describes a Brazilian trade preparation or cup classification, while Espírito Santo is a state of origin. We show the buyer’s requested wording, but Fazenda 1888 will identify the actual origin and cup classification on each offer, sample and contract.
Grade Explained
What a buyer is purchasing.
Screen grade describes physical bean size. It helps roasting consistency, but it does not prove flavour, defect level, crop freshness or origin. Those points must be agreed against the exact lot.
- Screen meaning
- Large beans retained on 17/64 and 18/64-inch screens, subject to an agreed tolerance.
- Trade description
- Rio Minas is a trade/cup description, not proof that the coffee was grown in Espírito Santo.
- Cup classification
- The contract must state whether Rio-type flavour is intended, tolerated or excluded.
- Packing
- 60 kg jute bags standard; moisture-barrier liners available by agreement.
Indicative cup
Lot-dependent; approve by sample.
- Cocoa
- Roasted nut
- Full body
- Low to moderate acidity
- Lot-dependent Rio character
Best suited to
Final use depends on roast trials.
- Espresso blends
- Traditional dark roasts
- Full-bodied retail coffee
- Commercial single-origin lines after sample approval
Processing
Availability varies by crop and lot.
- Natural is common
- Other preparations may be offered
- Process and drying method must be declared per lot
Buyer approval checklist
Use the contract and approved pre-shipment sample—not the website description—as the final quality reference.
- Require the state, producing region, crop year and traceability documents for the exact lot.
- Approve a representative pre-shipment sample from the exact contracted lot.
- Agree the screen distribution, defect limit and test method in the contract.
- Confirm moisture, water activity, crop year, density, colour and foreign-matter limits on the lot COA.
- Cup the sample for cleanliness and check for musty, mouldy, phenolic, fermented or other off-notes.
- Match every certificate, sample and shipping document to the same lot or container reference.
Documents to agree
Requirements differ by destination. The final sales contract should state who provides each document and which independent inspection applies.
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Bill of lading and certificate of origin
- Phytosanitary certificate where destination rules require it
- Quality, weight and fumigation certificates as contracted
- Insurance certificate for CIF shipments
Storage guidance
Keep green coffee cool, dry, ventilated, off the floor and away from walls, sunlight and strong odours. Avoid humidity and temperature swings that can cause condensation.

Independent reference sources
These sources explain grading and regional context. They do not certify a Fazenda 1888 lot; the contract sample, lot certificate and agreed inspection control each shipment.
