Grade Explained
What a buyer is purchasing.
Screen grade describes physical bean size. It helps roasting consistency, but it does not prove flavour, defect level, crop freshness or origin. Those points must be agreed against the exact lot.
- Screen meaning
- Beans retained on screen 13/64 inch and above; exact percentage and tolerance must be contracted.
- Quality position
- Screen 13+ describes size only; defect count, cup class and processing determine commercial quality.
- Indicative character
- High body and crema with cocoa or nut notes; poor lots can show harsh or woody notes, so cup approval is essential.
- Packing
- 60 kg jute bags standard; liners, big bags or bulk container solutions by agreement.
Indicative cup
Lot-dependent; approve by sample.
- Dark chocolate
- Roasted nut
- Low acidity
- Dense body
- Strong finish
Best suited to
Final use depends on roast trials.
- Espresso blends
- Crema and body building
- Soluble coffee
- Commercial dark-roast programmes
Processing
Availability varies by crop and lot.
- Natural / dry process
- Pulped natural may be available
- Washed quality-focused lots may be available
Buyer approval checklist
Use the contract and approved pre-shipment sample—not the website description—as the final quality reference.
- Approve a representative pre-shipment sample from the exact contracted lot.
- Agree the screen distribution, defect limit and test method in the contract.
- Confirm moisture, water activity, crop year, density, colour and foreign-matter limits on the lot COA.
- Cup the sample for cleanliness and check for musty, mouldy, phenolic, fermented or other off-notes.
- Match every certificate, sample and shipping document to the same lot or container reference.
Documents to agree
Requirements differ by destination. The final sales contract should state who provides each document and which independent inspection applies.
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Bill of lading and certificate of origin
- Phytosanitary certificate where destination rules require it
- Quality, weight and fumigation certificates as contracted
- Insurance certificate for CIF shipments
Storage guidance
Keep green coffee cool, dry, ventilated, off the floor and away from walls, sunlight and strong odours. Avoid humidity and temperature swings that can cause condensation.

Independent reference sources
These sources explain grading and regional context. They do not certify a Fazenda 1888 lot; the contract sample, lot certificate and agreed inspection control each shipment.
